 We are going to study another new chapter today -SORTING MATERIALS INTO GROUPS.

If you look around , you will be able to see many things around you , like tables , chairs , beds, cupboards ,plants, the sun, etc.
These things can be broadly grouped into - natural and man-made 
nonliving things.




All man -made nonliving things are made up of one or more materials. Material is a specific sample of matter.
Some commonly used materials to make things are- wood,glass,cotton,jute,synthetic fibres,clay,cement, metals,plastics, paper etc.



ALL THINGS ARE MADE OF ONE OR MORE MATERIALS

 -A measuring scale may be made of wood, plastic or steel.
-A bowl may be made of glass, stainless steel,plastic,thermocole etc.




A MATERIAL CAN BE USED TO MAKE DIFFERENT THINGS- 
For example,
- Metal is used to make pans, nails, keys , tins etc.
- Plastic is used to make chairs ,tables ,plates ,mugs ,pens etc.
--Glass is used to make jugs,plates,bowls tumblers etc.

SOME COMMON PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS ARE-

- All materials can be felt by one or more of our senses. Our senses help us in identifying things by smell,touch ,taste etc.
-All materials occupy space - A book or a pen or a glass kept on a table occupy space.
- All materials occupy mass. Mass is the amount of matter in any object.

1.Define the terms-
a) Materials-Material is a specific sample of matter.
b) Mass -Mass is the amount of matter in any object.

2. List three common properties of materials.
ans : a)All materials can be felt by one or more of our senses. 
b)All materials occupy space 
c) All materials occupy mass.
