1. It involves picking materials by hands.

2. It is effective for small quantity.

3. It requires the unwanted materials to be different in size, shape, or colour from the desirable substance.

4. It is time consuming.

5. E.g. To separate small stones in grains.
1. It involves using a SIEVE (mesh strainer) to separate materials of different sizes.

2. It is effective for materials with different sizes.

3. It consumes lesser time.

4. E.g. To separate chaff from wheat flour.
To separate fine sand from gravel.
1. It is the process of dropping the heavier materials so that the lighter material is carried by wind.

2. It requires the materials to be of different weights.

3. E.g. To separate husk from wheat
1. It is a process where sun dried stalks is beaten against a hard surface to free the grain.

2. It is done Manually and also by a machine called Thresher.

3. It separates large quantities of grain from the stalks.
