What do you think is reason that we need to separate the constituents of a mixture?
Nature has an abundant supply of substances that we need. Often these substances come with one or more undesirable substances. For example, air is a mixture of many gases but only oxygen is used by humans.

THE NEED TO SEPARATE THE CONSTITUENTS OF A MIXTURE:
1. To remove any harmful or undesirable constituent. e.g. husk is unwanted in wheat.

2. To obtain a pure substance. e.g. Sand in water solution is filtered to obtain pure water.

3. To obtain useful substances. e.g. Petroleum is a natural substance from which many useful substances are extracted.

SEPARATION METHODS:

To separate the constituents of a mixture we need to know the Properties of the Constituents.

1. SOLIDS IN SOLIDS are separated by SIMPLE PHYSICAL METHODS

2. INSOLUBLE SOLIDS IN LIQUIDS are separated by SIMPLE PHYSICAL METHODS 

3. SOLUBLE SOLIDS IN LIQUIDS are separated by SIMPLE CHEMICAL METHODS.
