Components of Food Part 3

Welcome back to our science class. During our last class we learnt about the different types of Carbohydrates . I do hope you are reasonably thorough and can differentiate one from the other.
Today we will learn a few Food Tests.
What are these food tests?
Well they are simple tests by which we can test a particular food and check whether it contains sugar, starch, fat or protein.

The TEST FOR STARCH you were familiarized with in class 4…….
Do you recall how a leaf was tested for the presence of Starch ?
Name the liquid that is used to test whether a given liquid or substance contains Starch ?

YOU are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT… it is IODINE.
DO the questions written in green in your notebook
7) Write the tests for the following-
a)TEST FOR STARCH:
- Take the food material or a suspension of the food to be tested
- Add a few drops of Iodine Solution (REDDISH BROWN IN COLOUR)
- IF the food item / the suspension becomes BLUISH BLACK in colour it indicates the presence of Starch.

b)TEST FOR SUGAR:
- MAKE a suspension of the substance to be tested.
- Add a few Drops of BENEDICT ‘S REAGENT and heat the mixture.
- AN ORANGE RED precipitate indicates the presence of Glucose.

c)TEST FOR FAT:
- Crush the FOOD sample on a piece of White Paper.
- IF the paper becomes translucent it indicates the presence of FAT / OILS

Activity to try at home
Take a few groundnuts, or til or almonds or cashew nuts or walnuts and crush one on a sheet of paper. Crush it with a rolling pin (बेलन ) … it leaves an oil stain
