SEPARATION OF SUBSTANCES -POST 4

 GOOD MORNING!!!

After the blog, you will be able to:
1. Evaluate the different Physical methods of separation of insoluble solids from liquids.

Let us discuss in detail the
METHODS TO SEPARATE  INSOLUBLE SOLIDS FROM LIQUIDS

When big solid particles are dissolved in liquids. These can be separated by the following ways:

1. SEDIMENTATION AND DECANTATION:

Sedimentation: The process of settling down of heavier insoluble particles from mixture is called Sedimentation.
Decantation: The process of transferring the clear liquid without disturbing the sediments is called Decantation.

Click on the link below to watch an activity for separating sand from water.

LOADING: The process of making the settling down faster by dissolving a small quantity of alum in the solution.

Alum is added to muddy water during the process of sedimentation  Because the fine particles in the solution gets loaded with alum particles and makes it faster to settle down.

2. FILTRATION:

Filtration is a method of separation of fine insoluble solids from liquid by passing the liquid through a porous medium that retains the solids but allows the liquid to pass.

The clear liquid collected after the process is called Filtrate.

3. Churning:

Traditional method of churning Milk to get Butter.

DEFINE CHURNING.
ANS: Churning is the process of shaking up cream or whole milk to make butter, usually using a butter churn (shown in the picture above).

It is used to separate lighter solid particles in the liquid.

We will discuss some activities to show the above methods in the next blog.

See you tomorrow
